Why is Operation Read encouraging students to set daily reading goals?
"A chart from Pearson Education Canada shows that a child who reads books on their own for 21 minutes per day will read 1.8 million words per year; at 14 minutes it will equal one million words per year and at three minutes only 200,000 words per year - leading to an immense discrepancy in vocabulary."

Dear Parent,
The Learning Disabilities Association of Halton is a charitable organization that has been serving the Halton community for the past 35 years. It is involved in a variety of services that assist families and the informing community on the many facets of learning disabilities. These services include;
- providing support, guidance and up-to-date resource information
- providing the opportunity for the sharing of information and common concerns
- encouraging research in the field of learning disabilities
- supporting and generating legislative initiatives
- working to further the educational, social, recreational, legal, medical, vocational, and employment opportunities for people with learning disabilities in Ontario
One of our goals is to create public awareness of learning disabilities by informing the public of the issues and challenges faced by people with learning disabilities. The other is the desire to promote healthy and proper literacy practices in children. With this is mind, we are planning to launch our first annual fundraising event called Operation Read read-a-thon. During this read-a-thon, all those children participating will be practicing healthy literacy practices by reading consistently every day. The LDAH will also be placing up-to-date resources on literacy into their teacher’s hands.
As is the case with many non-profit, charitable organizations, LDAH relies on community support, donations, and nominal membership fees to fund our programs and operations. The proceeds from Operation Read will go towards:
- Ensuring that support and services will continue to be available to all who are in need.
- Ensuring that our general operating expenses are covered
- Updating our computers and technology, as well as purchasing new interactive learning software
- Purchasing up to date resources and educational materials
- Raising awareness of scientifically proven literacy practices
The LDAH would sincerely appreciate the participation of your family in this fundraising endeavor, by encouraging your child to collect pledges and take part in the Operation Read read-a-thon.
Sincerely,
Heather Holden, President.
