Parent Workshop: Organizing the Disorganized Learner

We are pleased to offer this upcoming Back to School workshop just in time for the end of summer! Designed for parents and guardians who wish to learn more about how to help their child get organized and take away some time-saving strategies for use at home and at school.

Date & Time: Wednesday August 28, 2019, 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Location: LDAH Resource Centre, Rotary Youth Center – 560 Guelph Line, Burlington Ontario

3T’s – Organizing the Disorganized Learner:
 
1) Tools: Does your student lose notes or forget to hand in homework? Develop a filing or binder system that works for your student’s learning style
2) Tasks: Reduce your student’s procrastination by learning how to ‘chunk’ material to maintain focus
3) Time: Feeling overwhelmed? Learn how to create an individualized schedule for homework / assignments that helps both you and your student

About our Presenters… 

An experienced Mindfulness Trainer, Learning Disabilities Strategist and sought-after life coach, Alison Brindle is a mother of a child with a diagnosed LD and current President of LDAHH. Diane Vandenbossche is a retired Special Education Teacher and long-standing volunteer and Board Member at LDAHH; she sits on Halton District’s Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) and is an active advocate for children with LDs and specializes in parent advocacy and Resource Facilitation.

Assistive Technology Overview for Parents 

This workshop is presented by Ryan Hamilton, facilitator of the Assistive Technology (AT) Program and will be focused on the following topics:

  • Explanation of the software that is taught in the AT Program and what the students are using during the sessions
  • Walk through of the course content and learning objectives of the AT Program
  • Information on what our schools are currently using/providing this technology and its relation to your child’s IEP and its wording
  • Discussion on what parents can do to set up the software tools as well as what other materials might be needed for their student
  • Q&A session will be held at the conclusion of the presentation

Introduction to Advocacy, your child’s I.E.P. and an overview of other important topics for parents

This informative workshop will provide a broad overview for parents looking to receive information and support.

Our subject matter experts will cover basics on navigating the school system, provide details on the I.E.P. (Individualized Education Program), the IPRC (Identification, Placement and Review Committee)  and suggest practical tips and ideas for parents who are looking to be the best advocates for their school-aged child.

This session is ideal for new members of LDAHH or parents who are starting their advocacy journey. There is no charge to attend, but donations are always appreciated.
