Description:

Early Foundations for Reading and Writing: Prevention and Intervention Using Web-Based Resources

The internet has become an invaluable resource for educators, support professionals and parents who want to better understand and teach children who are having difficulties learning to read and write. This session will take the audience on an engaging and instructive tour of a new website that offers a wide range of information and re-sources to support growth in literacy. This freely available site was designed and developed by the speaker, working together with university-based and school-based experts to put what is known about reading and writing development and edu-cational best practice into a form that is both ef-fective and appealing.

Learning Outcomes:

The audience will learn about:

  • the main “literacy food groups” for growth in reading and writing
  • key factors causing reading and writing difficul-ties and disabilities
  • identifying young children who may be at risk for reading/writing failure
  • strategies to increase children’s reading/writing success

Speaker: Dr. Dale Willows

Dr. Willows (OISE/University of Toronto) is an internationally recognized scholar, a teacher educator in language and literacy, and a psychologist specializing in learning disabilities. She has long been committed to putting research into practice in regular and special education.
